Brilliant start up guide, just wanted to say I have always used Core PHP coding to make web applications simply because I’m too lazy to learn new things. For the past few months I have been looking at Frameworks and I have to say Yii is the easiest I have come across. I tried CakePHP but the configurations and installation alone put me of it. I can honestly say I have learned more Yii in the past 3 days than I have with Cake for 3 weeks. I visited http://davidjconnelly.wordpress.com/2011/07/03/the-best-php-framework-of-2011/ which chose Yii as the best PHP framework written by David Connelly who spoke very highly of your tutorials. Now I see why, he said you’r Yii’s nuclear secret weapon

Hi Larry, thank you so much for contributing to the community with this fantastic series. I have been a web developer for 18 months now and learned from nothing after a 15 year career in electrical retailing, only over the past 8 months or so have I really got to grips with PHP and jQuery. OOP and using a framework was my next big hurdle and you have made it seem so easy.
As part of a learning project last year I built an application from raw using PHP and now after this weekend I feel ready to rebuild it in yii, thanks again

I thought it’d be cool to make the first 2012 comment
No seriously, I’ve just finished the 8 parts of the series, and many thanks again for the quality of your tutorials.
Some commenters obviously came by an obstacle I’ve met myself. Let’s keep your employee/department sample app, how one can display department name in the Employee “Manage” view, AND at the same time make the header searchable, and why not, sortable?
Of course, using ‘department.name’ instead of ‘departmentId’ is enough to display the relevant field, but the header stays empty, and you cannot search that column, nor sort it.
