10 New Year’s Resolutions Every Web Developer Should Make

January 18, 2013 — 6 Comments

NetTuts+ recently posted a very good article titled “10 New Year’s Resolutions Every Web Developer Should Make“. Written by Andrew Burgess, the article goes through ten recommendations every Web developer should consider (as you would imagine from the title). I particularly like:

2. Get Better At What You Know

3. Explore a New Field

6. Take Better Care of Yourself

I’m really not a New Year’s resolutions kind of person (that being said, my next post will be my goals and hopes for 2013), but I thought this article really presented a great list of ways Web developers can improve their skills and, frankly, the quality of their lives.

What’s on your New Year’s resolutions list?

  1. I’ve always found that learning something new can be fun and develop new and interesting relationships. Sometimes that means “learning something new to me” which can mean learning something old (confused yet?) I’m trying to get a handle on “Curl” which is new to me, but, seems to have been around for quite some time. Is it widely used… I suspect so… in the corporate and/or marketing world? Thanks for your continued endeavors to keep us honest and moving forward!

    • Thanks, Jerry, for your input. I definitely agree with you on the benefits of learning something new. cURL is definitely worth your time. It’s very useful and common as Web services are more and more on the rise.

  2. Definitely a good list of todos for any developer.

    9) Generate passive income, this is number one for me at the moment. Tired of the gaps between projects and invoices being paid it’s time to take matters into my own hands and be the client and developer of a website.

    2) Get Better At What You Know, had a wake up call when trying to install AMP on Windows 7. Time to buckle down and read a PHP book or two, and I know just the right ones ;P

    6) Take Better Care Of Yourself, I’ve been working out for a while now. Trying to put on stacks of muscle rather than having any need to loose any stack of weight in my case.

For those wanting to take better care of yourself, do lots of research into what actually works (science rather than infomercials) before you really invest any time or money into anything. In fact you shouldn’t need to spend much money at all.

    • Thanks, Jason, for your input. Passive income is the common goal for so many of us in computing. I’ve got it some with the book sales, but not even close to being enough to live on. Check out the work of Amy Hoy. She writes a lot on this subject.

  3. New Year resolutions.

Learning something new…It gets harder! learning something new doesn’t have to mean learning computing skills. Languages give a break to the usual stuff, and one thing I found really useful was to learn about something in the world around you and create something from it. I’m working on a new site which will be informative and helpful, will help produce a small income for me but which also teaches me something about the history around me. And I have to learn a new skill too, in this case, PHP! Whether anyone likes my new site doesn’t really matter, ’cause I do!

Get fit….A lot of what I do means I sit down a lot and that’s not such a good thing. So if you get stuck in some work related issue, go for a run or bike ride, or just go talk to someone about anything while taking a walk. I’m sure it works. Don’t get a coffee and a doughnut.

Oh, the one site I’m doing involves learning something new, walking a lot, and makes me better at what I do. I guess that will last me all year!

Thanks for the site and your Books Larry.
